Web Hosting Uptime, Live

Our own WordPress test sites on the same plans we review, checked every minute from Virginia. A failed check is tried twice more, 5 seconds apart; a minute counts as down only when all three fail.

    Uptime by host

Uptime by hour for the first week, then by day, newest on the right. Open a row for response times and every outage.

Response time = DNS, connect, TLS and first bytes of the home page, from Virginia (USA).

    How we check

The same three rules for every host, every minute, around the clock.

    1

    A real WordPress site

Each host runs one of our own test sites on a plan we review: shared, VPS and managed cloud.

    2

    Checked every 60 seconds

The home page is loaded from Virginia once a minute, 1,440 times a day, with a 15-second limit.

    3

    Down means down

A failed check is tried twice more. Only three failures in a row count, and every outage is listed with its reason.

    Questions

    How do you measure uptime?

Every 60 seconds a checker in Virginia (USA) loads the home page of each test site. If a load fails or the server answers with a 5xx error, it tries twice more, 5 seconds apart. The minute only counts as down when all three tries fail, so one dropped packet never shows up as an outage.

    Whose sites are these?

Ours. Each one is a WordPress site we set up on a plan we bought or were given for testing, the same plans we review. Nothing on them is tuned for this board: they run the way a new customer's site would.

What does the response time show?

The time to open a connection and get the first part of the home page back: DNS, connect, TLS and the server's answer. It is measured from Virginia, so hosts with servers in the eastern US look faster than ones in Dallas or Arizona. Use it to spot slow days and trends for one host, not as a speed ranking across hosts.

    What does "our maintenance" mean?

Minutes when we changed something on the site ourselves, such as a new SSL certificate or a load test. They count as neither up nor down, and they are listed so you can see them.

How is the uptime percentage worked out?

Minutes up divided by minutes checked, since we started watching that site. A month has 43,200 minutes, so 99.9% uptime still allows about 43 minutes down; 99.99% allows about 4.

Uptime is one number. Here are the rest.
